Last week we signed up for the Appliance Derby and we’re stoked! The Appliance Derby is a derby cart race with a twist. The twist being that all of the carts are constructed from a variety of appliance parts and other repurposed objects. The “track” runs down Maple Street, adjacent to the Depot Market Square. Last year the Appliance Derby drew more than 1000 spectators and the 2012 race is bound to be bigger and better.
The Chuckanut Builders crew is hard at work building our derby cart, aka the ChuB Tub. The ChuB Tub might not look like much now but find us on race day! I’m sure you’ll hardly recognize the old Coldspot fridge, bed frame and other miscellaneous hardware for what it once was.
In addition to racing the Chub Tub we are helping sponsor the event! We’re sponsoring the derby because the Appliance Depot, a project of ReUse Works, works to promote and support worker training, job creation, and business development opportunities for low-income residents. Of course it helps that the event is an awesome, quirky, community building good time!
Other local sponsors include: ReStore, Z Recyclers, Habitat for Humanity Home store, Pepper Sisters, Safe and Easy Recycling, Bayport Financial Services, Bay City Supply, Time in Play Café, the WFC Country Store, Copy Source, Whats Up Magazine, Cascadia Weekly , Nancy Chambers Design Graphics and Café Rumba.
Look for the ChuB Tub on race day!
